Small Footprint, Room to Breathe: A Thoughtful Start to Your ADU
A small home can still feel generous. At ADU Design Studio, we start with the way you want to live, then consider how the rooms, openings, and outdoor spaces can work together.
Start with a purpose, not a square-footage target
Will your ADU support a family member, welcome guests, or become an independent home? Write down the everyday activities it needs to support: cooking, working, resting, storage, and spending time outside. That brief helps you compare layouts with a clearer sense of what matters.
Give every room a useful connection
Consider what you see when you enter, where furniture will sit, and how you move between the kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping space. A direct path through the home can help a compact layout feel calmer. Privacy deserves equal attention: a bedroom window and a neighbor’s outdoor seating area may need different treatment.
Think beyond the walls
A small terrace, a shaded entry, or a well-placed opening can become part of the daily experience. Our California and Arizona Journal articles will explore these design choices alongside regional planning updates, with local sources linked where relevant.
Explore a concept on your property
Our property planner lets you explore sample ADU footprints over aerial imagery. Use it to start a conversation about placement and orientation. It is a concept tool: imagery and sample footprints do not establish property lines, permitted setbacks, or construction feasibility.
Browse our ADU design collection, including Courtyard Cottage and Sunrise Studio, to explore different starting points. The model imagery is conceptual and requires site-specific design development.
